![]() SubD has traditionally been the domain of applications like 3dsMax, Maya. The Pixar engine drives most subd modelers. ![]() ![]() It’s kind of like a 3D equivalent of a spline, where you move control points. Once all edges of a surface or polysurface are joined, it will be considered. You can tug and pull on the cage to change the shape of the surface. In order to make a solid in Rhino you simply need to eliminate all naked edges. Subd’s same thing… you want light light light… keep removing/combining stuff until your model falls apart or you can’t get the shape you want, then undo 1 step…that is likely the place you want to continue modeling from. SubD, or sub division modeling, is a set of surfaces based on a cage of points. subd rule 1 clean box mode clean smooth mode messy box mode whole lotta problems to sort thru with smooth mode. ![]() Push and pull to explore complex, free-form shapes in realtime. ![]() Accurate, organic modeling just got easier. Unlike other geometry types, SubD combines free-form accuracy while still allowing quick editing. Faces separated by a SubD crease or an unwelded mesh edge cannot be merged. Totally get where you’re coming from wanting an automagical rebuild (and that would be great, don’t get me wrong), however the essential KEY to good sub d modeling is managing your topology to be clean and as absolutely simple as humanly possible and that is very rarely achieved with an automated result.Īs I teach this I am constantly telling the story of Colin Chapman (head of lotus cars) His philosophy on chassis building (i’m paraphrasing) was keep removing parts until it collapses under it’s own weight… then add the last part you removed back in… Hi everyone, i was wondering is there any way to convert a true subd model to surface in the way that catia and siemens nx are doing in rhino those softwares consider each subdivided polygon as a single surface rather than converting the whole thing, in that way machining the part would be a lot easier. Fwiw, most of your modeling should be done in box mode, (tab key) using smooth mode only to verify along the way. For designers who need to explore organic shapes quickly, SubD is a new geometry type that can create editable, highly accurate shapes. ![]()
